Float or Fish the Rogue River
Written by Robert Roos
Getting out on one of the local rivers is my favorite way to reconnect with nature and to absorb some of the astounding beauty our region has to offer. For adventure and nature lovers there are numerous options to enjoy the beauty and excitement of the world famous Rogue and Klamath Rivers.
Fishing – Southern Oregon is the home to world class trophy water fishing, and is most famous for its abundance of elusive Steelhead & Salmon. Spend the day in a drift boat with a knowledgeable guide service for a chance at catching a braggin’ sized specimen, and best of all, equipment & lunch will usually be provided. For those of you that would prefer to try your luck without a guide, there are lots of opportunities to test your skills from the banks of the numerous parks and public access points, and are often very productive.
River Rafting, Float Trips & Jetboat Tours – For a ride on the wild side check out the options for tours on the scenic Rogue and Klamath Rivers. Jetboat tours from Grants Pass allow you to enjoy the beautiful scenery and wildlife with a few thrills thrown in. Expect to get wet, but it isn’t physically demanding. On the other hand, river rafting takes demands more physically, but give you a much more intimate experience with the river. There are half-day, one-day and multiple day excursions to suit a variety of skill and interest levels. Tours leave from Ashland, Gold Hill, Shady Cove and Grants Pass – all short drives away. Some service providers include Hellgate Jetboat Excursions, Indigo Creek Outfitters, and Rogue Klamath River Adventure.
