Experience how Cornelius Beekman, Jacksonville’s most prominent pioneer, conducted banking in the late 1800s when Historic Jacksonville again opens the 1863 Beekman Bank, the oldest bank in the Pacific Northwest, for special “Behind the Counter” tours from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day in 2017. Between 11 am and 4 pm on Fridays through Mondays, costumed docents will share stories of late 19th Century banking practices, gold shipping, and handshake deals. Over $10 million in gold crossed the bank’s counters during Jacksonville’s heyday in the second half of the 19th Century (worth over $1 billion today). The bank is located at the corner of California and North 3rd streets in Jacksonville.  It has been preserved intact as a museum since Cornelius Beekman closed the doors in 1915. Over 4,600 people visited the Beekman Bank in 2016  when grants from the Jackson County Cultural Coalition and the Jacksonville Lodging Tax Committee made it possible for Historic Jacksonville to open this Jacksonville museum during the summer months and Victorian Christmas weekends.  A suggested bank “deposit” of $2 will help us maintain this program and expand “banking hours.” Private group tours are also available.  For additional information, contact Historic Jacksonville at 541-245-3650 or e-mail info@historicjacksonville.org. http://www.historicjacksonville.org/

A Fun and Interesting Volunteer Project Many grave markers are covered in moss, lichen, dirt and with time, have darkened and become quite difficult to read. Join us and learn the latest techniques and tools to safely clean these stones. This is a hands-on workshop so dress accordingly. Since this project began in 2013,volunteers have cleaned a total of 452 grave markers, along with curbing and urns, a very impressive number. You may want to bring a stool to sit on while working, sun screen and a hat. Meet at the Sexton’s Tool House, top of the Cemetery Road, for instructions and to pick up supplies.
