Costumed tour guides share both history and tales of pioneers whose spirits still dwell in many of our historic buildings. These tours are not your typical ‘ghost tours’ with special effects. They are history tours about real hauntings resulting from past events. The stories—some scary, some benign—come from multiple sources, from people who have experienced these lingering spirits. They are our attempt to recognize and honor these restless souls. Both tours feature haunted houses. The 7:00 pm Courthouse route shares tales of brothels, epidemics and hangings. The 7:30 pm Britt Hill route includes stories of arson, saloons and Oregon’s first Chinatown. October tours begin at 6pm, 6:15pm, 6:30pm, 6:45pm and 7pm on both Friday, October 12, and Saturday, October 13. Friday night tours feature the Britt Hill route; Saturday night tours follow the Courthouse route. Tour group size is limited! Cost is $5 per person and reservations are strongly suggested. The objects inside were all family possessions accumulated over the years, a rarity when most historic homes are furnished with period pieces. The Beekman House Museum is located at 470 E. California Street in Jacksonville. Beekman Family Life tours are $3 per person. Beekman Family Life tours will augment Historic Jacksonville’s Victorian Days tours on the third Saturday of each month through October and its 1932 Living History tours on the fourth Saturday of each month through September. Victorian Days provide an opportunity to explore a different aspect of 19th Century life each month through the lens of Jacksonville and the Beekman family. 1932 Living History tours encourage visitors to interact with Beekman family members and friends as they close up.... Contact 541-245-3650 or info@historicjacksonville.org. “Walk ups” will be accommodated based on space available. Private tours can also be scheduled for a minimum of 10.... Historic Jacksonville, Inc. brings the 1873 Cornelius C. Beekman House Museum to life with 1932 Living History Tours at 11 am, 1 pm and 3 pm. The country is deep into the Great Depression. Franklin Roosevelt is running for President. Groucho Marx is on the radio. In Jacksonville, locals are digging up backyards and streets looking for any gold left from the town’s original gold rush. Hobos go house to house looking for hand outs. Julia Beekman has passed away, and daughter Carrie is moving to Portland where her brother Ben has lived for the past 40 years. Historical interpreters portray Carrie and Ben as they close up the family home, going through years of accumulated belongings. Relatives and friends join them for reminiscences about life in the late 1800s and observations and comments on current events and a depression era town and nation. And the public is invited to be part of the story! The Beekman House is located at 470 E. California Street in Jacksonville. Tour admission is $10 for adults; $8 for seniors and students. Tours are not.... Behind the Counter tours at Beekman Bank 11:00 am Behind the Counter tours at Beekman Bank Jul 28 @ 11:00 am – 4:00 pm Experience how Cornelius Beekman, Jacksonville’s most prominent pioneer, conducted banking in the late 1800s when Historic Jacksonville again opens the 1863 Beekman Bank, the oldest bank in the Pacific Northwest, for special “Behind the Counter” tours from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day in 2017. Between 11 am and 4 pm on Fridays through Mondays, costumed docents will share stories of late 19th Century banking practices, gold shipping, and handshake deals. Over $10 million in gold crossed the bank’s counters during Jacksonville’s heyday in the second half of the 19th Century (worth over $1 billion today). Location: California and North 3rd Streets in Jacksonville. It has been preserved intact as a museum since Cornelius Beekman closed the doors in 1915. A suggested bank “deposit” of $2 will help us maintain this program and expand “banking hours.” Private group tours are also available.
